Bruce Saunders - Guitar James Suter - Bass Adam Jackson - Drums Bruce Saunders is a guitarist, composer and educator currently residing in Austin, TX. After receiving his Masters degree in jazz/classical guitar from the University of North Texas in 1986 he moved to New York City where he was a resident until late 2013. During his tenure in NY he recorded, performed and toured with some of the worlds best jazz musicians. Since moving to Austin he has played with many of the world class jazz musicians in the city and state. Saunders is currently a lecturer at the University of Texas/Austin’s Butler School of Music where he teaches private guitar lessons and a faculty member of Berklee’s Online University (BOL) where he developed and teaches two jazz guitar courses. Elias Haslanger - Saxophone Erik Telford - Trumpet Sam Pankey - Bass Stephen Bidwell - Drums About Erik Telford: Largely know for his work in the groups Nori and Monte Warden and the Dangerous Few, Erik Telford presents his biggish band, Asilomar, for the first time at Monk's. The night will feature original compositions and arrangements, largely inspired by Erik's upbringing in the coastal California town of Pacific Grove. Erik has performed as a leader or sideman on four continents with artists such as Bill Berry, George Bohannan, Maria Schneider, Joshua Redman, James Williams, Jon Faddis, Wynton Marsalis, and Louie Bellson. He has been an artist at the Monterey, Montreux, North Sea, Melbourne, and Yokohama Honmoku jazz festivals. About Stephen Bidwell: Stephen Bidwell was born in Washington, DC, and grew up in the Virginia suburbs. Since first being handed drumsticks in the late 80s he has studied and lived in West Virginia, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, and New York but has called Austin, Texas home since 2005. Somewhere in those travels, he earned a Bachelors’s degree in classical percussion (two of them actually) and a Master’s degree in Jazz studies. Since early 2018 he has been the drummer for the Grammy-nominated Black Pumas, a psychedelic soul group known for incendiary live shows. When not on tour with Black Pumas, Stephen plays in several diverse projects (Hard Proof, The Calm Blue Sea, Azmaris, Mood Illusion), works in any genre you can think of as a sideman and teaches lessons at his home studio. About Elias Haslanger: Over a 30-year career, Austin-based saxophonist and composer Elias Haslanger has earned a distinct place in jazz, drawing comparisons to Coltrane, Rollins, Webster, and Shorter. He’s performed and recorded with a wide range of artists, including Ellis Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson, Sheryl Crow, Charlie Hunter, Black Pumas, and The Temptations. Mentored by Harvey Pittel and Dick Oatts, Elias studied at UT Austin, Manhattan School of Music, and earned a Master’s in Composition from Texas State. He’s performed at top venues across the U.S. and Europe and served as a guest artist at universities nationwide. His 8 albums have received international radio play, with LIVE at the Gallery earning 4.5 stars from Downbeat and his 2024 release featured on Apple Music’s Pure Jazz playlist. Elias and Mike are joined by long-time colleagues Ross Margitza on piano, Ryan Hagler on bass and Daniel Dufour on drums and they will play selections from the recording as well as some new titles arranged by Elias and Mike. Erik Telford - Trumpet Topaz McGarrigle - Saxophone Sam Pankey - Bass Jaron Marshall - Piano Stephen Bidwell - Drums Stephen Bidwell and Jaron Marshall have been anchoring the rhythm section of Austin’s Grammy-nominated psychedelic-soul juggernaut Black Pumas since the band’s meteoric rise in 2019. Outside the Pumas' world tour circuit, the two have long bonded over a mutual love of hard bop and funky early-'60s Blue Note cuts: music that grooves as hard as it swings. When their schedules align, they call up a few trusted players and put together a setlist that leans into the soulful side of the jazz canon. This project is a nod to their roots and a chance to stretch in a different direction with deep pocket, deep cuts, and no filler. Tito Carrillo - Trumpet Joshua Jaime - Alto Saxophone Marcelo Boccato - Piano Juan Acosta - Bass Adam Jackson - Drums Tito Carrillo is a trumpeter, composer, and educator whose music blurs the lines between Afro-Caribbean music traditions and modern jazz. Born and raised in Austin to a Puerto Rican father and Mexican-American mother, Carrillo came to prominence in the mid-90’s in Chicago’s rich jazz and Latin music scenes, becoming a top call soloist, bandleader, and freelance trumpet artist. The Chicago Tribune describes him as having “acquired a reputation as a fluid improviser, doubly blessed with a warm lyric style and technique to burn.” The artists he has collaborated with are as diverse as his skill set: Chicago heavyweights Willie Pickens, Ryan Cohan, and Geof Bradfield; Chicago Latin groups Chinchano (Juan Pastor) and the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble (Victor Garcia); big bands such as the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, and the Smithsonian Masterworks Orchestra (David Baker); salsa legends Andy Montañez, Cheo Feliciano, and Cuban flutist Orlando “Maraca” Valle; jazz greats such as Kurt Elling, Claudio Roditi, Jon Faddis, and Paquito D’Rivera; and pop icons Quincy Jones and Phil Collins. Carrillo released his debut solo album in 2011, entitled Opening Statement (Origin Records), to rave reviews. His most recent project Urbanessence (Origin Records), was released in October 2022 to much critical acclaim, and was selected as one of the top Latin music albums of 2023 by the North American College and Community (NACC) Radio Chart. In addition to leading his own groups, Howard is currently a member of the critically acclaimed five-time Austin Music Award-winning ensemble, Church On Monday. Piano - Ben Clifton Bass - Chad Wesselkamper Drums - Gavin Moolchan Pianist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Ben Clifton hails from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Growing up in the city’s storied jazz community provided an early foundation for learning the language of jazz and developing a broad musical sensibility. His formative experiences in the church further shaped a deep connection to music’s emotional and expressive power. Clifton earned a degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Pittsburgh, where he was mentored by respected figures such as Frank Cunimundo and the late Geri Allen. During this time, he performed alongside renowned artists including Joe Lovano, Bobby Watson, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Larry Coryell — opportunities that greatly shaped his evolving artistic perspective. Now based in Houston, Clifton has quickly established himself as a dynamic and in-demand pianist within the city’s diverse jazz scene. Known for his expressive musicality, collaborative sensibility, and commitment to the evolving jazz tradition, he has performed with artists such as Jalen Baker, Shelley Carrol, and Andre Hayward, and collaborated on genre-blending projects with DJ Sun and the Aperio Orchestra. His appearances at the Houston Jazz Festival, Texas Jazz Festival, and other notable events underscore his growing presence in the regional and national jazz communities. Drawing inspiration from both traditional and modern piano lineages, Clifton continues to incorporate these influences into a personal and evolving artistic language. On July 11th of this year he released his debut full-length album, Overlook, featuring a collection of his original compositions. Join us for a live taping and listening-room concert for AJS Presents: Milan Moorman Quintet Ben Irom-piano Billy Satterwhite-bass Tom Raines-drums James Rubino-tenor saxophone Milan Moorman-trumpet and flugelhorn. Milan studied trumpet, composition and jazz studies at Mount Hood College in Oregon. From there he went on to work cruise ship orchestra jobs, eventually finding his way to Austin, Texas where he was quickly welcomed into the local jazz scene. After many years as a sideman he began leading his own groups, who have become popular favorites at venues around the Austin area. Milan has a unique jazz trumpet sound influenced by the trumpet masters of the past; he’s known for his exceptional control over the instrument and ability to deliver a melody with care, finesse and honesty. Join us for a live taping and listening-room concert for the Eloise Carter Walne Quintet! Eloise Carter Walne - Vocals Gil Del Bosque - Tenor Saxophone Dan Redner - Piano James Suter - Bass Aaron Parks - Drums Growing up as the sole Ella Fitzgerald and Natalie Cole enthusiast in the household, Eloise’s passion for jazz blossomed naturally. She began voice lessons at age 13 at the San Fransisco Conservatory of Music. In high school, she shifted to an independent coach, oscillating her study between musical theater and jazz traditions. While studying Theater and Education Psychology at Sarah Lawrence College, Eloise’s step-father encouraged her desire to sing by producing a house concert series during her semester breaks from school. After receiving her bachelors degree, Eloise attended The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater, a two year acting conservatory in New York City. Her postgraduate pursuit of music began as side project with a friend as a way to feel invigorated while auditioning. A few gigs later, Eloise decided to investigate a career in music more seriously. Now she is fresh out of the Tribeca Jazz Institute’s Vocal Intensive, taught by Lucy Yegazarian. An emerging artist in both the acting and music fields, Eloise was recently in a short film premiering at the Austin Film Festival, is working on a Shakespeare adaptation entitled Gents Can’t Measure, writing her first short film script, and planning to release her debut EP in 2025. With deep Texas roots, she’s thrilled be back at Monks Jazz Club in Austin. Please Note: This is a live-taping, so we'll be enforcing a whisper-policy!
