Fri, Jan 09

Join us for a live taping and listening-room concert for Eloise Live from Monks | Texas Tour! Eloise Carter – Vocals Marco Santos – Guitar Mike Sailors – Trumpet Judah Guerra – Bass Daniel Dufour – Drums Growing up as the sole Ella Fitzgerald and Natalie Cole enthusiast in the household, Eloise’s passion for jazz blossomed naturally. She began voice lessons at age 13 at the San Fransisco Conservatory of Music. In high school, she shifted to an independent coach, oscillating her study between musical theater and jazz traditions. While studying Theater and Education Psychology at Sarah Lawrence College, Eloise’s step-father encouraged her desire to sing by producing a house concert series during her semester breaks from school. After receiving her bachelors degree, Eloise attended The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater, a two year acting conservatory in New York City. Her postgraduate pursuit of music began as side project with a friend as a way to feel invigorated while auditioning. A few gigs later, Eloise decided to investigate a career in music more seriously. Now she is fresh out of the Tribeca Jazz Institute’s Vocal Intensive, taught by Lucy Yegazarian. An emerging artist in both the acting and music fields, Eloise was recently in a short film premiering at the Austin Film Festival, is working on a Shakespeare adaptation entitled Gents Can’t Measure, writing her first short film script, and planning to release her debut EP in 2025. With deep Texas roots, she’s thrilled be back at Monks Jazz Club in Austin. Is born of the marriage of two groups, the Sahara Quartet and the Eternal Now! 5tet. Sahara is a group that came out of the open free jams at the Sahara Lounge on Austin’s east side, curated by Damien Valenzuela. Here Valenzuela, Ebaugh, Kerner and Mankenberg found themselves coalescing as a group, and have been gigging around town for a few years with their own brand of free and composed post-bop. They have a second self produced LP slated for release on December 20th. Eternal Now is the moniker used by Austin instrumental greats The Point when they turn to improvised music. The two groups met in an East Austin studio, David Boyle’s Church House. In February of 2025 they recorded an amazing group of compositions and improvisations that are slated for a release sometime in the spring of 2026, to be titled Vox Cordis. These musicians are hard workers on the Austin scene… Ebaugh came out of the rock band Heartless Bastards to form his own country rock band the Tender Things, and is a journeyman bass player. Valenzuela is in the rising funk band Cazayoux, and along with Kerner, anchors the band at Sahara’s Africa Night. In addition to their band The Point, Roddy (a relative of Ted Roddy) and Montesinos are gigging country and blues musicians as well, as members of Cactus Lee, The Mellows and Sentimental Family Band. Nico Léophonte owns a renowned studio called Alnico Studios, and is producer of The Point’s first album. Mankenberg is a remarkable drummer with deep ties to the Austin jazz community. Scott Robinson – Saxophone Mike Sailors – Trumpet Ross Margitza – Piano Ryan Hagler – Bass Daniel Dufour – Drums “Jazz Futurist, Mad Scientist… There’s no one else doing anything close to what Mr. Robinson is doing.” – Wall Street Journal “Vividly realized” – New York Times “A beautiful tenor player… Like a careful shopper, choosing just the right notes.” – Tenor Legend Benny Golson One of today's most wide-ranging instrumentalists, Scott Robinson has been heard on tenor with Chet Baker, trumpet with Lionel Hampton, alto clarinet with Paquito D'Rivera, and on bass sax with the NYC Opera. On these and other instruments including theremin and ophicleide, he has been heard with jazz's greats representing nearly every imaginable style of the music. Primarily a tenor saxophonist, Scott’s discography exceeds 275 recordings, including collaborations with Frank Wess, Hank Jones, Joe Lovano, Ron Carter, Bob Brookmeyer, Toshiko Akiyoshi, even They Might Be Giants. He’s performed with Maria Schneider Orchestra for three decades, appearing on David Bowie’s final recording. His releases as a leader have garnered five-star reviews from Leonard Feather, DownBeat Magazine, Wall Street Journal and respected sources worldwide. Scott’s recent album Tenormore, won Best Album of the Year in the JazzTimes readers poll, and rated “Indispensable” by France’s Jazz Hot magazine. Scott has performed in some 60 nations, in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Village Vanguard, the Library of Congress, and the Vienna Opera House. His appearances for dignitaries include a U.S. Presidential Inauguration, and a command performance honoring the birthday of the king of Thailand. As a performer, leader, sideman, or Artist-in-Residence, he has been invited to more jazz festivals globally than we could possibly begin to name here. Scott has participated in numerous Grammy-winning and nominated recordings, and received four fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. He has been profiled in the Encyclopedia of Jazz and Grove's Dictionary of Jazz, along with books by Nat Hentoff and others, and once was featured on CNN. At his home near New York City, Scott has constructed a studio/laboratory for sonic research, containing an astonishing assortment of instruments and devices including the bass marimba that Sun Ra recorded with in the 1960s. Many adventurous recordings from this facility have appeared on his own ScienSonic Laboratories imprint. Scott's collaborators on these projects include Frank Kimbrough, Julian Thayer, Henry Grimes, Roscoe Mitchell, Milford Graves and Marshall Allen. ScienSonic's recordings have been certified by the Space Foundation as Certified Space Imagination Products. Scott is an endorsing artist for Vandoren Reeds, and is signed to Denis Wick of London for brass. As a composer his works cover a wide range, from jazz tunes to large scale combined orchestras. He is currently at work on his one-man improvised symphonic recording, Reach for Tomorrow. After nearly four years of daily work, approximately 9½ minutes of fully-mixed music for 140 instruments has been realized. This project will take an estimated 12-15 years to complete. A respected performer in all areas of jazz, Scott Robinson has arrived at his own unique musical voice which, as once described in a North Sea Jazz Festival program, "combines solid foundations with great daring". We are thrilled for the opportunity to host the one and only, Scott Robinson. Presented by The Jazz Purveyor.
