Join us for a live taping and listening-room concert for the Alexa Torres & Mario Wellman Quartet! Alexa Torres – Violin Mario Wellmann – Guitar Guillermo Lopez – Bass Daniel Dufour – Drums About Alexa Torres: Alexa Torres is a Latinx jazz violinist, composer, and ethnographic researcher based in Austin and New York. She has performed across the U.S., Latin America, and Europe, sharing the stage with Grammy-winning artists such as Kurt Elling and Mon Laferte. Her work blends contemplative melody, rich harmonic textures, and atypical forms. Her 2024 debut, In Situ, received airplay on NPR and coverage in Strings Magazine and All About Jazz. Earlier this year she was nominated in the “Best Strings” category for the 2025 Austin Music Awards. About Mario Wellmann: Chilean jazz guitarist and composer based in New York and Austin. A two-time DownBeat Student Music Award recipient, Mario has performed in South America, Europe, and the U.S., sharing the stage with artists including Sinne Eeg and Kurt Elling. His writing and improvisation fuse modern aesthetics with jazz traditions. The Alexa Torres & Mario Wellmann Quartet presents original music that weaves contemporary jazz language with rhythmic ideas from Latin America. This Fall 2025 tour frames the music around reconstruction—building sound worlds from fragments of melody and memory: Chile’s democratic rebuilding after the dictatorship, the post-earthquake/tsunami recovery of communities, the personal reweaving of lives shaped by exile and diaspora, among other themes. Anchoring the group are Guillermo López (MM, Juilliard; appearances at Blue Note, Smalls, and Dizzy’s) and Daniel Dufour (performances with Seamus Blake, Rotem Sivan, and others across the U.S.; faculty at UT Austin). Please Note: This is a live-taping, so we'll be enforcing a whisper-policy! Cold bottles of still and sparkling water will be available for purchase, but this event is BYOB.
